General description of the collection: The James A. Crothers photograph collection includes a few World War I (WWI) unidentified snapshots, but almost the entire collection involves transportation port activities during World War II. The one identified unit is the 8th Major Port in Boston, Massachusetts. The ports identified in the photos are Cherbourg, France, and Bremen, Germany. There are also a number of totally unidentified photos which relate to port activities, many of these being copies of Signal Corps photos, and a series of photos of officers playing golf in Bremen in 1945.

Born in Cecil County, Md. in 1893. Graduated from Delaware College in 1916 with a B.S. in civil engineering. Served as Corporal with the 1st Delaware Infantry while serving on the Mexican border, 1916-1917. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, 1917. Served overseas in World War I with the 808th Pioneer Infantry, 1918-1919. Discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, 1919.
